CLEMSON 2010-2011 INCOMING FRESHMAN
- (PG-NR) Cory Stanton (5’11, 160)
Like Boston College’s Steve Donahue, new man on campus Brad Brownell walked onto campus and found no 2010 commitments waiting for him.
However, unlike like Donahue, Brownell was able to go out and get at least one guy, a speedy point guard from Tennessee.
Corey Stanton first signed with Wright State last year. It looked like a good fit. Stanton is a prototypical mid-major point guard. A bit on the small side and not known for his shooting stroke (although he scored 30+ seven times his senior year, he’s wicked quick with an amazing first step.
He’s the kind of guy that gets to the NCAA tournament with the mid-major, blows up in round one, takes down a top seed, Gus Johnson creams himself and when it’s all said and done, everyone’s asking, how did this kid not get picked up by the big schools?
Coach Brownell is trying not to make that mistake.
Now the question is, will this kid ever be a day-to-day ACC point guard? It’s one thing to be a one-hit wonder during the opening weekend of the tournament, but this league is a grind. Of course, it will probably be a while before we find out what kind of player Cory Stanton will be.
The Clemson Tigers already have two decent point guards on their roster (Demontez Stitt and Andre Young), so don’t expect Stanton to get much playing time as a freshman. Look for him to get some decent minutes off the bench next season, with a chance to start by year three.
