That's 70 bowl eligible teams out of a total of 120 Division 1 programs. Nearly 60% of Division 1 football gets a post-season. Don't even get me started on how goofy that is. You can sell me on keeping the bowls but 35 games is about 10 too many.
Let's get started.
Independence: BYU (MWC No. 3) vs. North Carolina (ACC No. 7)
Champs Sports: Notre Dame (Big East No. 2**) vs. Miami (ACC No. 3)
Nice matchup, and a preview of a rivalry that's getting renewed in 2010. Miami here seems about right.
EagleBank: Marshall (C-USA) vs. N.C. State (ACC No. 8)
Yes this is what Tom O'Brien was hired for. EagleBank bowl bids and 6-6 seasons. NC State fans have to hope it ends up better than this.
Music City: Boston College (ACC No. 6) vs. South Carolina (SEC)
The Music City bowl doesn't have Kentucky in this game? The Music City needs to move up the ACC bowl pecking order. Switch them and the Sun Bowl, because Nashville, TN is pretty close to most of the ACC. One of these days BC will get one of those top 4 bids. The Eagles always seem to get screwed.
Meineke: West Virginia (Big East No. 3) vs. Clemson (ACC No. 5)
Clemson would bring a bazillion fans to this one. It's just down the road in Charlotte, NC. This would be a fun game with Clemson's athletic defense facing WVU's Noel Devine.
Sun: Georgia Tech (ACC No. 4) vs. Arizona (Pac-10 No. 4)
This is the number four bowl in the ACC, but it seems like a punishment to send a 8 or 9 win ACC team out west. Lose the Gator get the Sun Bowl. That's a great tradoff. You'd rather fall to the Meineke or Music City Bowl. Paul Johnson keeps things going in Atlanta.
I really like this game. If FSU made it here with 8 or 9 regular season wins and an ACCCG Bowl game appearance then you'd have to consider Jimbo Fisher's first season a success. Win this one and the FSU resurgence is on.
Talk about a physical matchup! John Clay of Wisconsin and Ryan Williams of Virgina Tech are two of the best running backs in the country. Want to go out on a limb? Pick these two in your national title game.
