Ranking the ACC Basketball Programs Since Expansion

by All Sports Discussion

Since I had such a good response to my Ranking of the College Football Programs in the ACC since conference expansion, I decided to take a stab how the college basketball teams ranked.

It's not that I expected anyone other than North Carolina and Duke to be the top 2. They did both each win a national title, but I did want to see which one held the top spot.

After the Heels and Devils, you might be a little surprised where some of the other ACC teams ended up.

My ranking system is as follows

Avg number of total wins since 2005
Avg number of ACC wins since 2005
National Titles (12 pts each)
Final 4 and ACC Titles (Tournament or Regular Season) (6 Pts each)

-and I yes I know the regular season is not officially recognized as the ACC Champion, but I think it deserves credit.

NCAA tournament Appearances (3 Pts each )
1st Round NBA Picks ( .5 Pts each )

North Carolina Tar Heels 28.8 11 12 42 12 2.5 108.3

1. The Heels were just cruising along winning National Titles, ACC Titles, and going to Final 4's until a disastrous 2009-2010 season. You have to figure they won't be down for long.

2. Duke's 2010 National Title closed the gap on the Heels big time. The scary thing is the 2010-2011 team might be better than this year's Championship squad. Duke is coming for you North Carolina.

Maryland Terrapins 22.4 9.2 0 6 9 .5 47.1

3. No surprise here. Maryland and coach Gary Williams are generally regarded as the 3rd best basketball program in the ACC. If Williams could only get elite level talent to College Park, the Terps would be closer.

4. I'm not sure to many people thought that the Clemson Tigers would rank 4th on this list. Oliver Purnell elevated the Tigers program into a consistent NCAA tournament team. Can new coach Brad Brownell keep up the momentum?

5. Former head coach Al Skinner had some success at Boston College, but it only took a couple of lean seasons for BC to make a change. Steve Donahue of Cornell Sweet 16 fame takes over.

6. Leonard Hamilton has the Noles program gradually moving forward. There have been 2 straight NCAA tournaments with double digit ACC wins. They might be ready to take the next step.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons 18.6 7 0 0 6 1.5 33.1

7. The Deacs suffered the tragic death of Skip Prosser 2007. Dino Gaudio took over and despite some good talent the Deacs underachieved. Jeff Bzdelik a curious choice in my opinion is now the head man. He never had a winning record at Colorado.

8. The Hokies are on the rise. Seth Greenberg quietly does a solid job at a school that's more noted for football. The 2010-2011 team should be one of his better ones.

9. Tony Bennett has been at Virginia just one year. The Cavs have won just 14 regular season ACC games the last 3 years. Bennett has alot of work ahead of him.

10. It's almost criminal that Georgia Tech has the fewest ACC wins over the last 5 years given some of the talent that's rolled through Atlanta in that time.
