Ranking ACC Football Teams Since Expansion

by All Sports Discussion

Posted: 7/5/2010 7:03:53 AM

When the ACC expanded to their current 12 teams in 2005, many expected the league to be dominated by Florida State and Miami.

It didn't turn out that out way. Virginia Tech has been the ACC's most consistent winner, with 2 ACC Titles, and a win in a BCS game. I wanted to see how the rest of the conference stacked up against each other with the criteria I felt was the most important in determining the value of an ACC college football team.

My ranking system is as follows

Avg number of total wins since 2005
Avg number of ACC wins since 2005
BCS Wins (4 pts each)
ACC Titles (3 Pts each)
Division Titles (2 Pts each )
1st Round NFL Picks ( .5 pt each )

Virginia Tech Hokies 10.4 6.2 4 6 6 .5 33.1

1. The Hokies have been the class of the ACC. What else can you say? Frank Beamer and his staff don't get enough credit for producing the ACC's best program over the last 5 years.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 8.6 5.6 0 3 4 1.5 22.7

2. The Jackets have been a consistent winner for years. They haven't missed being in a bowl game since 1996. With Paul Johnson at the helm they show no signs of slowing down. Georgia Tech won the ACC in 2009.

3. The coaches change, but Boston College just keeps winning 8,9,10 games a year. Underestimate them at your own risk.

Florida State Seminoles 7.6 4.2 0 3 2 3 19.8

4. Being anything but number one or two on this list is not what the Noles or their fans expect. That's why Bobby Bowden is out and Jimbo Fisher is in.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons 7.2 4.2 0 3 2 .5 16.9

5. Jim Grobe won an ACC title at Wake Forest 2006. Are you kidding me? What Grobe has done with the Demon Deacons is remarkable. Wake was a laughing stock before his arrival.

6. The Tigers have been respectable, but is there anyone out there that thinks they couldn't be better? Dabo Swinney replaced Tommy Bowden and got them one step closer to an ACC Crown with an Atlantic Division title last year.

7. I remember when the Canes joined the ACC, they said "We might be in your league, but you aren't in ours" I guess not. The Canes are improving, but Randy Shannon needs to win big this season.

9. This is probably Ralph Freidgen's last season at Maryland. The Terps are getting worse not better in recent years.
There just isn't a lot of talent in College Park.

10. Of all the bottom 5 teams, the Tar Heels are the ones on the biggest upswing. Consecutive 8 win seasons, and in 2010 a legitimate shot at the ACC Coastal Division.

12. David Cutcliffe has done an incredible job just making the Blue Devils competitive. It's the toughest job in America. There's little fan support for a Duke Football team that's overshadowed by the school's basketball program.
