I'll admit this expansion thing had me scared for the future of college athletics. If Texas had pulled the trigger and pulled their posse (Sorry Oklahoma, Texas was in charge of this move) and went to the Pac 10, there is no telling the domino effect that would have occurred. I haven't seen a team have this much power since Notre Dame signed their own TV Deal.
The Pac 10 becomes the Pac 16. The SEC makes a move on the ACC or the remaining Big 12 teams. The ACC and Big 10 go after the Big East. Notre Dame joins a Big 10. The collegiate conferences become unrecognizable and The BCS collapses. The BCS Collapses hmm... maybe that isn't the worst thing to happen, but you get the picture.
Then in one desperate move by Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe, Beebe pleaded to the remaining Big 12 members not to leave. He argued that the 10 teams left would be able to generate higher television revenue per team than before.
Then he waited...
When Texas announced they would stay in the Big 12, the rest of conference likely will follow suit. I for one am glad for it. I understand that Texas probably didn't do this for the good of college football. They did it for the good of Texas, but that's fine.
The Pac 10 will probably pick up 1 more team, and it appears they may look to Utah, and that may the last big conference change. In this fluid situation there still might be surprises, but I think we are nearing the end of conference moves at least for 2010. Who knows what might happen next year.
