BC's AD just held a press conference officially announcing the decision to fire Al Skinner after 13 years as head coach at Boston College. The decision was made last Wednesday after Deflippo and Skinner met to discuss their "philosophical differences". The news was kept private out of respect for Coach Skinner as he searched for a new job.
Deflippo said that he is looking for several qualities in the new coach (please note this is para-phrased):
- An exciting brand of basketball
- Passionate and energetic team (specifically diving for loose balls and taking charges)
- Relatable to fans, students, university, etc.
No immediate time table has been set for the new hire, although it was stated that BC will take their time. Defilippo said "this is a very important hire" for the future of this basketball program. He believes Boston College is a premier coaching job, which should generate interest.
Boston College will treat Skinner and his staff "very,very fairly" in terms of compensation. Pat Duquette has been named interim head coach for the time being.
