A Second Look: The Davis story...

Ed Davis

Ed Davis

Before I begin this post, which believe me I rather not be doing, I want to state that I do not have inside information (ala deep throat), but I will say this, someone that I know (and trust) outside of the program but with plenty of knowledge of the coaches and players told me, about ten days to two weeks ago, that Ed Davis was gone when this year is over. With that disclaimer out of the way, when I heard about the story of the power forward being on a sport’s agent web site I was pretty shocked. Not shocked that it would happen, but that it had happened now, with the season still going. Of course all of this coming with the season that North Carolina is having and with Davis getting hurt and you know that the rumor mills and conspiracy theorist must be working overtime like no one could believe. But the real question for me, and for anyone else reading this, should be pretty simple: do we believe this or not? And while the question might be simple, the answer is anything but.

Do I believe that the Davis family and this sport agent, named Vincent Porter, have talked? Yes, I would say that could have happened. Of course the fact that Terry Davis, Ed’s father, and the agent talked about all of this on ACC Now just adds a bit more to all of this. Do I believe that Davis, who’s father play in the pro’s and knows the in’s and out’s of what an agent does, would sign anything before seeing where he would lands if he left after a so-so season that ended with an injury and was filled with rumors? No, that I do not believe that for one second. Do I believe that Ed Davis wants out of college (whether it was UNC or anywhere else) after this season? Yes, I firmly believe this. Do I think that his parents might be a little less eager of pulling the trigger on him jumping early? That too I would believe.

Add to all of that if I believe the agent who said “that his site was hacked”? Sure, I can believe that. Right now, with so many eyes focusing on this story a lie would be the stupidest thing anyone could do. Then, put into the mix what a lot of people have tried to bring up on web boards, do I believe that the injury could have been a mixture of reality and damage control? No, I do not believe that for a second, not for a nano second!

Now, with all of that being digest, let me put in the last ingridient of the highly fragile mix. Do I believe in coincidences? No, that I never believe in. What do I mean by that? That while Davis might not have signed with an agent, and while the site might have been hacked, the fact that all of this happened and that the Davis family say to have talked to him, means that this storyline was going to get completed sooner or later. Bringing me back to that person that told me that Ed Davis was gone at the end of the season, and with this happening it just feels like that is exactly what is going to happen.

I also found very interesting that Terry Davis was very precise when talking about his son and the agent/agency:

“hasn’t committed to nobody verbally or in writing … and as far as the Web site, we don’t know what’s going on.”

As we all know people can engage in verbal contracts, and if that happened then the agent could have put Davis’ picture up on the site. But by saying that neither a verbal or written contract was entered into it basically put the family and the player out of the loop that this agency had created. Mr. Porter also stated that he didn’t have a verbal or written contract with the player, backing up the story, and bringing us back to the point of “not if but when” will the services of this agent be used by Ed Davis? I have to say this, like it or not, ready or not, I still feel like the 6′10″ forward is going to jump to the next level once the season is over. What will be interesting to follow, and might show if Davis was on the outs with the program, is what type of communication will be given to the media on Davis’ leaving (presser or just a statement) and if head coach Roy Williams will follow him during the work outs. Also, will the sophomore test the waters or will he jump right into them?

As we wait for more information to come out I guess we can say that the soap opera “The Young & Restless Players” is pretty much wanting for the next episode to be published.
