Fun With Stats: Around the ACC

Foul Differential

Don't forget we track foul differential for all games and conference games only.

  • UNC is getting the most favor from officials this season.  The Heels have 5.6 more fouls called for them per game than their opponent.  Their benefit largely comes from the fact that they only foul 13.6 times per game.
  • Surprisingly, Duke is 8th on the list with just 1.1 more fouls called for them per game.
  • Clemson and Wake Forest are actually seeing more fouls called on them than called for them.
  • Wake Forest gets the award for the most physical team, getting called for 20.8 fouls per game.

ACC Efficiency Chart

One of my favorite ways to visually see which teams are playing the best is our ACC Efficiency Chart.  The chart is fairly easy to read as you can distinguish the teams by looking at the description in each of the four corners of the chart.  The farther the team is plotted toward the bottom right, the better the team has played.  Right now Duke and Miami are the class of the ACC with Clemson, Georgia Tech, and UNC the next step behind.  We then get the Maryland and Wake Forest before we see the final 5 ACC teams.

Individual Tempo-Based Fun

Let's note a few highlights from our tempo-based stats at this point in the season...

  • The most used player in the ACC should be no surprise as Malcolm Delaney is involved in 37.7% of Virginia Tech's possessions.  The next few are no surprise either, Aminu (36.9%), Landesberg (35.6%), Vasquez (35.3%), and Tracy Smith (35%).
  • Brian Zoubek is pulling in rebounds at a freakish rate.  Zoubek's rebounds per 40 minutes totals 20.3 rebounds per game meaning Zoubek grabs more than a rebound per every 2 minutes on the floor.
  • Larry Drew II is leading in both Assists per 40 Minutes and Assist Ratio.  Drew gets an assist on 41% of his possessions.
  • Zach Peacock is leading the way in Turnover Ratio turning the ball over on 27% of his possessions.
  • Three Blue Devils lead the way in +/- per game.  No surprise that Jon Scheyer and Kyle Singler lead the way, but it is a surprise to see Ryan Kelly ranked third.
  • Another Blue Devil, Andre Dawkins is having an incredible season as well posting an effective FG % of 72%.
  • If you aren't familiar with any of these stats, check out our Stat Glossary.
