I've been hesitant to say anything about this until Duke makes an official statement, but the news is starting to get out.
It appears on Saturday on the way to the Duke game that Andre Dawkins' sister was killed in a car accident. The accident reportedly took place on Interstate 77 in Virginia. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Dawkins family and any others affected by this tragedy. Lacey Dawkins was 21 years old.
Since this site is basketball related, we are forced to look at the consequences on the court of such a tragedy. This isn't in any way an attempt to equalize the effects of such a loss, but an attempt to keep this on topic to our readers.
That said, It is likely that Dawkins will take an indefinite leave from the team to deal with this loss. Duke's next game is not until Tuesday December 15th against Gardner-Webb. I would expect Dawkins could return for the following game or at the latest by conference play in January.
