The Washington Post recaps Maryland's loss to Wisconsin (Box Score):
Maryland will depart from Hawaii tomorrow afternoon having dropped two straight games to the only major conference opponents it has faced this season. While the Terrapins have demonstrated that their press defense can produce positive results, recurring themes emerged during their stay in Maui that might be cause for concern with two more tough tests upcoming.
A day after shooting 54.8 percent from the free throw line, Maryland shot 58.8 percent from the charity stripe. The Terrapins also had to deal with two starters -- Sean Mosley and Jordan Williams -- getting into early foul trouble, the second straight game in which that was the case, as well. Adding to the list was Maryland's poor perimeter defense. The Badgers made 7 of 12 three-point attempts in the first half.
"We thought after last night watching them that if we doubled down and kicked it, since they didn’t make threes last night that that would work," Coach Gary Williams said. "But they made threes tonight when they kicked it out."
The Daily Progress recaps Virginia's win over Cleveland State (Box Score):
In this country, Will Sherrill is just your average college basketball player. Send Sherrill south of the border, though, and it’s a completely different story.
On Wednesday night in Cancun, Mexico, the junior walk-on erupted. Sherrill, a 6-foot-9 forward from New York City, had a career-high 18 points, six rebounds, three steals and a block to lead Virginia to a 76-65 victory in the Cancun Challenge.
Sylven Landesberg had a game-high 20 points for UVa (4-2). Mike Scott added 15 points and eight rebounds.
Cleveland State (3-3) was led by Jeremy Montgomery’s 14 points.Virginia, which was coming off a loss to Stanford on Tuesday night, was 10 of 17 from 3-point range. Sherrill was 4 of 5 from behind the arc.
UVa trailed 34-27 at halftime. The Cavaliers, behind Sherrill, made their move about midway through the second half. Sherrill hit a short baseline jumper, blocked a shot by Cleveland State’s Nigel Ajere, then hit a 3-pointer at the other end to help Virginia tie things up at 49.
Sherrill’s play was ineffectious. Teammates Sammy Zeglinski and Mustapha Farrakhan each hit big 3-pointers down the stretch as UVa pulled away.
ESPN has the recap of Miamil's win over Florida Gulf Coast (Enhanced Box Score):
DeQuan Jones scored a career-high 16 points to pace Miami in a 77-58 victory over Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday night.
James Dews added 15 on five 3-pointers and Malcolm Grant also scored in double figures with 14 for the Hurricanes (6-0), who are off to best start since 2007-08, when they were 12-0.Miami went on a 12-2 run to start the game, keyed by a pair of 3-pointers by Dews, and took a 39-23 lead into halftime.
Duke Basketball Report recaps Duke's win over Arizona State (Enhanced Box Score):
Playing a Herb Sendek coached team means a couple of things, and primary among these realities is that you probably won’t move very fast and you won’t score a lot. Doesn’t mean you won’t win, but you may feel like you just left the dentist’s office.
For Duke and ACC fans, the basic game plan is familiar: spread the court, move the ball, balance things between the backdoor and the three point shot. That’s a cartoon version, but there’s a lot of truth in it.
Sendek has tweaked the formula somewhat by adding in a matchup zone, but otherwise, it’s all familiar.
And truth be told, his ASU team runs it better than State ever did.
For almost 30 minutes, the game stayed tight as the Sun Devils, behind the leadership and play of Derek Glasser, executed their game plan with great efficiency. After Kyle Singler broke a 43-43 tie, things changed, though.
