In The ACC: Who Takes The Clutch Shot?

Mike Krzyzewski recently noted that in end game and pressure situations last season the Blue Devils got the ball to Gerald Henderson and let him create.  The Blue Devils simply don't have that luxury anymore as Henderson now plays for the Charlotte Bobcats.  So the question is, who steps up in the clutch this season?

We have the ability with our shot data to capture which players in the ACC took the most shots for their team in the last 2 minutes of a game.  We'll go ahead and include departing players, such as Gerald Henderson to give you an idea of players that will need to be replaced.  To the right of the team name, you'll note that we give you the number of games in which shot data was collected.

Boston College (11 Games with Shot Data collected)

Name FG FGA Avg Dist
Tyrese Rice 6 13 16
Reggie Jackson 2 5 14
Rakim Sanders 0 4 17
Biko Paris 1 4 13
Joe Trapani 0 4 11

Note: With the departure of Tyrese Rice, the big shots will likely turn to Joe Trapani and Rakim Sanders, who were a combined 0-8 last season.

Clemson (19 Games)

Name FG FGA Avg Dist
KC Rivers 7 16 11
Terrence Oglesby 7 12 19
Andre Young 6 10 13
Trevor Booker 6 10 6
Demontez Stitt 1 7 5

Note: KC Rivers and Oglesby depart and leave the two Clemson point guards and their big men down low.  The question here is can the Tigers get the ball to Booker in late game situations.  Often making a pass in those situations is more difficult.

Duke (28 Games)

Name FG FGA Avg Dist
Gerald Henderson 6 13 11
Kyle Singler 6 11 7
Elliot Williams 6 9 9
Nolan Smith 3 7 13
Jon Scheyer 3 6 19

Note: As Coach K noted, Gerald Henderson was option #1 for the Blue Devils, but Kyle Singler was not far behind and equally effective.

Florida State (14 Games)

Name FG FGA Avg Dist
Toney Douglas 4 18 14
Derwin Kitchen 4 8 18
Chris Singleton 2 6 12
Uche Echefu 2 4 6
Deividas Dulkys 0 3 19

Note: No surprise that Toney Douglas took nearly all of the big shots for FSU, but Derwin Kitchen who joined the team midway through the season was not too far behind.  One caveat here is that most of Kitchen's shots were from long range, a place he is less effective.

Georgia Tech (8 Games)
