UNC Gets First 2011 Commit, P.J. Hairston

Greensboro Dudley’s P.J. Hairston took less than a day to mull over the scholarship offer from Roy Williams before committing to be a Tar Heel. Hairston is the #3 SG in the class of 2011 and #19 overall according to Scout.com.

The word on Hairston is he can flat out shoot three pointers and is one of those players who is in range as soon as he walks on the court. His Scout.com profile indicates he already has the strength to go against ACC competition with his main weaknesses being his ball handling and mid-range game. In some ways he is similar to Wayne Ellington though Ellington was more effective with his mid-range game coming out of high school.

Two interesting points on this in terms of Roy’s recruiting. First, it is always important for UNC to grab quality in-state recruits. Hairston had apparently been in contact with the UNC staff for a long time and even made several unofficial visits to Chapel Hill. It seem as though Hairston was waiting for Roy to make the scholarship offer which high school junior accepted almost as soon as he received it. Secondly, after a significant run of recruiting big men, UNC now appears to be on a little binge for perimeter players to balance out the personnel. The 2010 class has guards Reggie Bullock and Kendall Marshall committed. Add Hairston to that duo(apparently Bullock and Hairston are already good friends) UNC will have a solid compliment of guards assuming Dexter Strickland and Leslie McDonald stick around until their junior seasons. Add those five in with the Wear Twins, Tyler Zeller as a senior and probably one or two more solid big men recruits UNC has a nice future laid out before them based on the state of recruiting right now.

For the 2010 class, Roy is still working on bringing in SF Harrison Barnes(Scout.com: #1 SF, #1 overall) which would be a huge coup and major blow to Duke. UNC also has an offer extended to C Josh Smith(Scout.com: #3 C, #8 overall). In the 2011 class, PF James McAdoo(Scout.com: #1 PF, #2 overall) is the main focus for the UNC staff. Roy is also looking at Tyler Zeller’s younger brother Cody and Marshall Plumlee, younger brother of the two Duke Plumlees.
