This recent article from WEEI criticizes Boston College coach Al Skinner's recruiting style. I have always been a suporter of Coach Skinner, even though BC has never been able to reel in McDonald's All Americans or big time recruits on a consistent basis. Despite this, BC continues to find quality players with star potential, this year it's Reggie Jackson. Skinner clearly has a knack for developing talent and bringing in players to run his system, but is labeled as a "laid-back" recruiter, something unseen in the world of big time college basketball. With all the success BC has had in basketball over the past years, people expect alot of the coaching staff. I myself would like to see BC aggressively recruiting local talent, but lets face it, BC is a football and to some extent hockey school first. The basketball facilities are solid, but not on the same level as UCONN or Syracuse.
It looks as though BC will not bring in any recruits for 2009 since they have only 1 graduating senior. The class of 2010, including the already committed Danny Lawhorn, will be huge for the Boston College Basketball Program. The 2010 class is very deep, especially in New England. Although BC has rarely been able to keep top local prospects in state, they appear to be in good shape for several New England prospects. These names include high profile players such as Central Catholic's Carson Desrosiers, Middlesex School's Rod Odom, Tilton Prep's Gerard Coleman, (check out this highlight reel of a dunk contest, he jumps over his 6'9 teammate) and Brewster Academy's Melvin Ejim. Any one of these players would be a big get for the coaching staff. I will be making more of an effort to focus on BC's basketball recruiting so look for more information to come.
