The Bad and the Ugly

Five games were on tap on Wednesday evening, and I think we're going to have a hard time finding the good, so we'll settle for the bad and the ugly.

The Bad

NC State 54 NCCU 29 (Box Score)

NC State's offense wasn't exactly pretty, but the Wolfpack defense held NCCU to just 20% shooting and just 29 points in the win.  Brandon Costner led the Pack with 18 pts and 7 rebs, while JJ Hickson added 13 pts and 8 rebs.  The bigger news in the game was that Courtney Fells injured his ankle, and left the RBC Center on crutches, although X-rays found no fracture.

The Wolfpack offense shot just 36% from the floor and 19% from three point range, and were outrebounded by 4 by NCCU.

After the game Sidney Lowe wasn't worried about the shots not falling...

"Depth is my biggest concern..."I think our shots will fall, [and] our defense is pretty solid. We've got to keep the defense up. We've been holding teams to 39 percent."

Georgia 79 Georgia Tech 72 (Box Score)

Georgia Tech couldn't slow down the Georgia offense who shot 50% from the floor and 47% from three point range.  Maurice Miller led the Yellow Jackets in the loss with 15 pts and 3 asts and appears to be taking control of the point guard position with back-to-back solid performances.  Anthony Morrow (14 pts, 6 rebs) and Lewis Clinch (11 pts) both added double-figures in the loss as well.

The Yellow Jackets fall to .500 (7-7) on the season and play six of their next nine games on the road, all in conference play.

The Ugly

UNC 93 UNCA 81 (Box Score)

UNC falls into this category as they let UNC Asheville, a team not known on the national scene, score 81 points on them.  Sure, UNCA boasts a giant, 7'7" Kenny George who posted a double-double with 14 pts, 11 rebs, and 4 blks, but the Heels are better defensively than they played last night.

Tyler Hansbrough was at it again finishing with 23 pts and 8 rebs, while Wayne Ellington showed no slow down after his game-winner at Clemson finishing with 19 pts on 6-11 shooting.  Ty Lawson (17 pts, 7 asts, 5 rebs) and Danny Green (14 pts, 7 asts, 6 rebs) both filled the box score with nice all around games.

Oh, did I mention Tyler Hanbrough dunked on the giant?

Charlotte 82 Clemson 72 (Box Score)

Ugly?  You bet, Clemson nearly knocked off #1 UNC on Sunday, and follows that up with losing to unranked Charlotte at home.  Sure, Trevor Booker had a great game with 32 pts, 11 rebs, and 4 blks, but where was everyone else?  Only Demontez Stitt could reach double-figures with 13 pts, but if you take away Booker's 10-14 effort shooting, the Tigers made just 29% of their shots.

Oliver Purnell gave all the credit to Charlotte in the loss, specifically their offense...

“They spread us and were patient, they worked harder offensively than we did defensively, and they were able to get into the paint. That stretch at the end of the first half where they expanded the lead really hurt.”

Duke 74 Temple 64 (Box Score)

While Duke was playing without Brian Zoubek (injured foot, more in a second) and Lance Thomas (respiratory illness), the Blue Devils won despite their offense looking like they were shooting a square basketball into a round basket.  Taylor King played just 12 minutes, but gave the Blue Devils just what they needed, as the freshman scored 15 pts, including 3-5 from three point range.  Demarcus Nelson (13 pts, 4 asts, 9 rebs), Greg Paulus (13 pts, 4 asts), and Jon Scheyer (10 pts, 4 rebs) also finished in double-figures.

Mike Krzyzewski knew his team had a lot of adversity going into the game, but thinks his team, especially the freshmen, weathered it well...

We feel really good about the win. We had some adversity during the last 28 hours with injuries, so we had a real
