We are still 7 months away from signing day, but I want to take a look at which ACC teams are building recruiting momentum and which need to get things going. There’s still plenty of time to right the ship if your school is struggling, and plenty of time for a potentially great class to fall apart. Don’t let anyone tell you different winning programs usually recruit well.
For the purpose of this discussion, we’ll include Louisville and exclude Maryland, because their recruits this will never play a game in their current conferences.
Clemson – Scout #9, Rivals #5, 10 Commits
This won’t be a huge class for Clemson, but they already have 10 commitments. QB DeShaun Watson is the gem thus far to a class that’s off to a great start.
Florida State – Scout #10, Rivals #7, 11 Commits
The Noles are hot on the Heels of Clemson with a very strong class developing. Kain Daub may be the country’s best linebacker.
Miami – Scout #11, Rivals #18, 8 Commits
I just wonder how good Miami’s recruiting will be when Al Golden doesn’t have the NCAA investigation hanging over his head. Golden is doing quite a good job on the recruiting trail.
Louisville – Scout #22, Rivals #9, 14 Commits
This is why Louisville was brought to the ACC. They are going to a force in the ACC. This looks like a well balanced class that’s Florida heavy.
Virginia Tech - Scout #25, Rivals #26, 8 Commits
The Hokies are off to solid recruiting start. They are doing a good job along with Virginia of keeping some of the best players in Virginia in-state.
Virginia – Scout #29, Rivals #29, 6 Commits
The Cavaliers don’t have big numbers yet, but there’s quality. They’ve got commitments from top 10 offensive lineman Steven Moss and top 10 safety Quin Blanding. Those are a couple of more top Virginia products.
North Carolina - Scout #30, Rivals #23, 8 Commits
This is a class UNC can build with. The got 4 star QB Caleb Henderson out of Virginia, and so far they’ve addressed needs on both side of the ball.
Duke - Scout #37, Rivals #32, 10 Commits
David Cutcliffe used Duke’s first bowl game to build some recruiting momentum. Already 10 players are committed, and most are of the 3 star variety which is pretty good for a growing program like Duke.
Boston College - Scout #39, Rivals #20, 10 Commits
Considering BC has won 6 games in 2 years, and that it’s head coaches Steve Addazio’s first recruiting class, BC is off to a good start. The Eagles reached down to North Carolina to nab DE Harold Landry. Landry’s offer sheet included Florida State and Auburn.
Syracuse - Scout #61, Rivals #63, 3 Commits
It’s always tough for a new coach coming into a program to recruit. Steve Shafer and his Syracuse program did get a commitment today from 3 star LB Zaire Franklin recently, so maybe that will get the ball rolling.
NC State - Scout #62, Rivals #48, 5 Commits
Dave Doeren is another first year coach, but he’s gotten 5 Commits so far for NC State. QB Jalen McClendon could be a future star.
Georgia Tech - Scout #71, Rivals #69, 3 Commits
The change in recruiting philosophy hasn’t payed off yet. Georgia Tech needs a big class this season and the numbers are low. The best offer listed for the current commits is from Southern Miss.
Pittsburgh - Scout #73, Rivals #77, 1 Commit
Tough to spin 1 commit into a positive at this point. Pittsburgh has a lot of ground to make up.
Wake Forest - Scout #80, Rivals #74, 2 Commits
Bad class or typical Jim Grobe class? Wake Forest rarely has a highly ranked class. Grobe will redshirt a bunch. Still just 2 commits at this point isn’t encouraging.
