Virginia’s Anderson, Notre Dame’s Grant, Duke’s Jones recognized
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia junior Justin Anderson and Notre Dame senior Jerian Grant have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Co-Players of the Week, while Duke’s Tyus Jones received ACC Rookie of the Week honors.
Anderson led the unbeaten and seventh-ranked Cavaliers to road wins at No. 21 Maryland in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and at Virginia Commonwealth, averaging 18.5 points and seven rebounds in the two games. Anderson shot 11-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, and was 11-of-13 from the free-throw line during the week. The Montross, Virginia, native tallied a game-high 21 points (on 6-of-7 field goal shooting), eight rebounds and one blocked shot in the 74-57 win at VCU. Earlier in the week, Anderson had 16 points and six rebounds in the 76-65 win at Maryland.
Grant averaged 21.0 points, 5.5 rebounds. 4.0 assists and 2.5 steals in leading Notre Dame to wins over 18th-ranked Michigan State (79-78 in overtime) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and Fairleigh Dickinson (75-57). The Bowie, Maryland, senior went 15-28 (.536) from the field in the two games. Grant scored a career-high 27 points against Michigan State and played all 45 minutes of the contest. He connected on 7-of-11 shots from the field, grabbed four rebounds, dished off six assists and made three steals. Against Fairleigh Dickson, he finished with 15 points (shot 6-11 from the field) and grabbed seven rebounds, dished off two assists and made two steals. Grant leads the conference in both scoring (19.0 ppg) and assists (6.44 apg).
Duke’s Jones scored a team-high 22 points and also led the Blue Devils in rebounds (six) and assists (four) in an 80-70 road win over No. 2 Wisconsin in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Apple Valley, Minn., native was 7-of-11 from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, and 6-of-8 from the foul line as Duke won its eighth straight game by 10-or-more points. Jones directed a Duke offense that shot 65.2 percent from the field, including 71.4 percent (15-of-21) in the second half of play. Jones helped the Blue Devils become the first Wisconsin opponent to shoot over 60 percent in the 18-year history of the Kohl Center.
