Wake Forest: Is Danny Manning done with the class of 2017?

Wake Forest had some visitors this weekend on unofficial visits.

The overwhelming assumption at this point is that the Wake Forest basketball roster is effectively set for the upcoming season. Summer school is already in full swing and the basketball season, believe it or not, is just 4 1/2 months away.

There were hopes that head coach Danny Manning would bring in a graduate transfer to fill out the final scholarship spot, but given the guys who became available, that didn’t come into fruition.

Over the weekend there was some chatter about a potential 2017 reclassification prospect in Elijah Elliott. This case is interesting for a few different reasons, primarily that Elliott is talking about some big name schools (Arizona, Kansas, Florida, Wake Forest), but is still currently undecided as to whether he wants to go to Prep School for 2017, or enroll in college.

Elliott isn’t ranked on 247Sports, and I am not sure if he would even take a scholarship spot if he were to enroll for 2017.

From the sounds of it, he is still looking for an offer from one of these schools, and if he got it then he would take it. Since schools can offer until August, if he had a good July on the summer circuit then a school could offer for 2017.

Here are his thoughts on Wake Forest and Danny Manning:

Wake Forest: “I think it’s a good fit with the way they run. I’ve known Coach [Danny] Manning for a while. He’s a mentor for me, so I think it’d be a good fit to go up there. I wouldn’t have to play on-ball. Those are just a few of the things that I look for.”

At this juncture I doubt that Elliott would come to Wake as a scholarship player in 2017, but perhaps if he wanted to go ahead and take a preferred walk-on spot it would be a good fit for both schools.

The big takeaway from this article is that while I do not necessarily think that Coach Manning is prioritizing Elliott to get him in the door in two months, I do think it’s good that he is keeping all of the doors open for 2017 should somebody prove to be worth a scholarship.

If anything significant changes on this front we will update as needed, but for now I still think that Wake is almost certainly done with the 2017 class despite having some guys in late for visits.
