This will keep Dave Clawson (theoretically) in Winston-Salem through 2024

Ron Wellman announced through the official website that Dave Clawson and Wake Forest have come to an agreement on an 8-year contract extension that will keep Clawson at Wake Forest through 2024:

"I am very pleased that Dave has accepted our contract extension," said Wellman. "The progress shown throughout the program, both on and off the field over the last three years, has been the type of progress we envisioned when Dave came on board. His energy, talent, integrity? and ability to recruit, develop ?and motivate our student-athletes, have led to our success not only on the field but in the classroom. We have an exciting future with Dave leading our program.?"

"I am honored to be offered this long-term contract," said Clawson. "I greatly appreciate the support that our president, Dr. Nathan Hatch, and athletic director Ron Wellman have given to our program, our staff and myself since arriving at Wake Forest three years ago. The future of Wake Forest football is bright and we plan to build on the success of our 2016 season."

As usual with Wake Forest, and most private schools, the amount of money given to Clawson was not disclosed. Per USA Today Sports, Clawson was making $2,113,166 per year.

I don’t have a ton of analysis to add to this as I’m unsure of what his initial contract was, or what this all really means. It seems like a pretty long time for an extension, as so much can change quickly in college football. I do believe that most of the time these contracts may be backloaded, but it is still a bit nerve-racking that Wake could be on hook for a few years worth of money should something go wrong.

In today’s day and age the coaching business is usually year-to-year anyway, but it does show that Wake Forest is very happy with Dave Clawson as a coach.

This is Ron Wellman’s second big extension for the Wake Forest head football coach, as he also gave Jim Grobe a 10 year extension in 2007 following the Demon Deacons winning the ACC Championship.

Clawson has won 13 games in three years, but won 7 games this season, including an upset over top 25 foe Temple in the Military Bowl.

We are lucky to have Coach Clawson as a head coach and hopefully this is an integral move in keeping him here in Winston-Salem for a long time.

Congratulations to Clawson and the Wake AD for getting this done in a timely and under-the-radar manner.
