Wake Forest Football: Clawson reiterates Kendall Hinton as starter

Will there finally be continuity at the QB position for Wake Forest this year?

Yesterday was the ACC Atlantic’s turn to shine at the ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte. One of the hot topics for Dave Clawson and the Demon Deacons this summer is the status of the quarterback situation. The competition is between RS Sophomore Kendall Hinton, who is coming off a season ending knee injury, and Senior John Wolford. When prompted with the question, Dave Clawson replied with the following (thanks to Les Johns):

While it may not seem as firm as an affirmation as one would hope, I feel as it’s the right way to approach the awkward situation. The offense seemed to be rolling with Hinton at the helm, but when he went down with the knee injury Wolford also stepped up when asked. This is fairly consistent with Clawson’s previous statements about how one doesn’t lose a job to injury.

It’s important to note two things from this: First the snaps. While Clawson said Wolford would get 1st-team snaps, he also made sure to emphasize that Jamie Newman needs to be ready as well in case of disaster (I.E. Clemson and part of the bowl game last year.) Newman was touted by national analysts in high school, and he is a quarterback in a linebackers body and a very underrated passer.

The second takeaway from this is the need to keep people healthy. Clawson made sure to say that the Deacs need to do a better job of keeping their QB(s) healthy. As I’ve said before, and I’m sure it is a resounding theme for this season, the offensive line holds the key for this season.

If they can hold their own and allow our running backs to have holes to run through, and give Hinton enough time in the pockets to read the defense then this offense has some explosive tendencies. If they don’t improve we could be looking at another sub-par rushing attack and possibly the 3rd string QB again.

Clawson, Wendell Dunn, and Cam(great name) Serigne seemed very optimistic at the presser, and giving some confidence at the QB position helps even more.
