Virginia Tech won every phase of the game today vs. the East CarolinaPirates – and in the process, eradicated some of those Pirate Demons today (coming into today’s game, Virginia Tech had lost their prior two games vs. East Carolina). Virginia Tech played excellent in all three phases, including offense, defense, and special teams. Specifically:
- On offense, Virginia Tech almost had 500 yards of total offense today. Jerod Evans account for three touchdowns, 282 yards passing, and 97 yards rushing (including a rushing TD that will likely be on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10). Isiah Ford also hauled in 4 receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown.
- On defense, Virginia Tech got a safety and limited East Carolina to 81 yards rushing (Hokies had six sacks, 16 tackles for loss, etc. – it was a good day). Virginia Tech gave up a couple of long TD passes (70 and 75 yard passes) to East Carolina’s Jimmy Williams, so the Hokies do have some things they need to work on – but Virginia Tech made East Carolina completely one dimensional. The stats that had my eye came from East Carolina QB, James Summers, the QB that lit up the Hokies last year – he had 34 yards on 10 carries today (Bud wasn’t going to let him do what he did last year).
- On special teams, Beamer Ball showed up in a big way. Two blocked punts – and a punt return for a touchdown. And these game changers flipped the field on offense for Virginia Tech.
Virginia Tech heads into the bye week scoring 49 points or more in back to back games for the first time since 1999.
