Duke announced on Thursday that seniors Ryan Kelly and Mason Plumlee would be named co-captains for the 2012-2013 season.  The news isn't all that shocking but perhaps what is, is that fellow senior Seth Curry, who was a captain last year was not named a captain.

This would be the second consecutive year that Curry has been left out of the running for a captaincy. Last season Miles Plumlee and Kelly were named captains and Curry was added later.

Mike Krzyzewski values leadership on his team and he takes the picking of captains very seriously so obviously he saw something in Curry last year that made him not want to name him a captain for this coming season.

I admittedly was a bit shocked at the season Curry had. He wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I was expecting of him given that during his transfer season he was said to have been the best player on the team but wasn't eligible to play.

Last year Curry differed too much to Austin Rivers, in my opinion, to the detriment of his own game.

Kelly may have been the most consistent player last season and his absence in the final weeks following a sprained foot prior to the start of the ACC Tournament cost Duke chemistry and that important stretch four position.

Kelly was one of the Blue Devils top all around players and one of the top scorers on the team. His versatility really came through last season and from the beginning of the year till the end he was almost always consistent.

Mason Plumlee started strong but faded at points. He clearly showed some go-to-moves in the post but wasn't always fluid with his moves and disappeared for stretches of the season. By coming back and not opting to leave for the NBA, Plumlee all but guaranteed himself a spot as a captain.

A lot of expectations have already been thrown at Plumlee to be the team leader and a dominant post player. I'm not sure if that will happen but if it does Duke will certainly be a better team.

I will be interested in seeing how Curry responds to not being selected as a captain. I suspect it will be a motivator and that he will step up his game this season. He really almost has to.
