Duke Back in the Mix For Amile Jefferson

Word on the street is Duke is back in the game for 2012 power forward Amile Jefferson.  Several reports on Twitter and various recruiting web sites are reporting that the Blue Devils are entering the race for the 6 foot 8 inch 197 lbs. Philadelphia product.

Jefferson is reportedly considering several other big-time programs as well as a few ACC rivals like Maryland and NC State.

Jefferson is a four star forward who adds to Duke's growing list of big man targets that already include Tony Parker and Ricardo Gathers.

This continues in the Blue Devils recruiting trend of casting a wide net for a specific position or type of player. Jefferson is significant smaller in frame than either Parker or Gathers. Both of those prospects are bangers in the post. Jefferson appears to be more of an athletic slasher than a low block banger.

There really isn't enough information to determine what this new development means. It could very well mean that Mike Krzyzewski and his staff aren't feeling as strongly about their chances with Gathers or Parker.

Both have said they are waiting until the spring signing period so it is possible that Duke is simply trying to keep its options open in the effort to land another post player for the class with the projected loss of Mason Plumlee and expected loss of brother Miles.

Jefferson looks more geared for a run and gun offense and could certainly add some muscle to his frame but so do most freshman coming into college.

It will be interesting to see what transpires. Duke has been on the other end of a recruit who was pursued late by another power. Some of you may remember what happened with North Carolina coming out of the blue to snatch Harrison Barnes from what many felt was a shoo-in to be a Duke commitment.

So perhaps  Duke can get into the game late and pull off a steal in the recruiting game at someone else's expense.

Other Recruiting News

In other news Duke recruiting isn't stopping at the 2012 class. The Blue Devils entertained three recruits on Sunday in their match up with Penn.

The No. 4 prospect according to Rivals.com, Julius Randle was in Cameron to take in the action along with class of 2014 recruits Theo Pinson and JaQuel Richmond.

Randle was making his second stop of the day as he was at the UNC-Monmoth game earlier in Chapel Hill before making his way to Durham.

He was joined by Pinson a five-star small forward and Richmond and four-star point guard both from Greensboro, NC.

Pinson recently sat down with Five-Star Basketball and discussed his interest in Duke among some others. You can watch that interview here.
