It would seem that ACC Basketball is at a low that I haven't seen in my lifetime. On Monday, Boston College lost to Rhode Island and Wake Forest lost to Wofford. Both teams were playing on their home courts. Sure, BC and Wake are the bottom dwellers of the ACC this season and I'll even give you that its not that surprising that they lost these games. The fact that it isn't surprising is sure depressing though. Jeff Bzdelik's postgame quote sums it up nicely, “You know what, I’ve done a horse crap job — and you can write that. I’ve done a horse crap job getting my team motivated and disciplined on both the offensive and defensive end. And somehow I’ve done a horse crap job of getting them to rebound the basketball. Throw it all on me.”
Virginia went to LSU and won a game that should help prepare the Cavaliers for conference play. Going on the road against LSU's tough defense and making winning plays in the final 2 minutes is a huge thing for this Virginia team.
Miami also picked up a win over UNCG on Monday night. The Hurricanes ended up winning 99-89, but the game was much closer than the final score indicated. The game was tied at halftime at 49 and the Spartans started the 2nd half on a 7-0 run. In the first half, Kenny Kadji totaled 23 points and 7 rebounds and ultimately finished with 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead Miami. While the Miami defense is a concern, consider that Miami scored 99 points with neither Malcolm Grant nor Reggie Johnson scoring in double-figures. That is some offensive versatility.
On Tuesday, Maryland hosts Cornell and Georgia Tech hosts a tough Alabama team. The Crimson Tide are ranked 27th according to Pomeroy and present an opportunity for Georgia Tech and the ACC. The league needs solid non-conference wins like a fat kid needs cake and a win tonight for the Yellow Jackets would get it done.
In football, Virginia Tech is in action tonight in the Sugar Bowl against Michigan. As we posted yesterday, the Hokies and Clemson are holding the ACC's reputation in their hands.
