Georgia Tech Season Preview
Projected Statistics (Returning Players Only)Explanation of Statistic Projections
Things to WatchThe Good - Paul Hewitt is Gone: I expect this to be an immediate improvement. There are some talented players on the team, even if there isn't a lot of depth, and Brian Gregory is a good enough coach to do something with those players. Whether he's the one to get Tech back to elite status is yet to be seen, but it is indisputable that he will at least be an immediate improvement over Hewitt. - Back Court: The loss of Iman Shumpert will be mitigated by the impressive play of Glen Rice Jr. and his new backcourt running mate, transfer Brandon Reed. Reed set a number of freshman records in his only year at Arkansas State. He'll be learning the system along with everyone else, so he shouldn't be at a marked disadvantage in that respect. Mfon Udofia is also a solid backup guard who will be able to spell Rice or step in to slide Rice to SF and keep Reed at SG. Jason Morris should also be improved after an up and down freshman season. - Experience: It seems like it's been a while since Georgia Tech had a veteran team, but this is certainly one. Leadership, especially leadership that has been through the trials that they have, will serve them well in tight games. The Bad - New Coach: As with any new coach, there is going to be a learning curve. While Gregory is an improvement, it will take the new guys some time just to learn all the things that Paul Hewitt should have been teaching them but wasn't. I imagine that curve will be diminished by the time ACC play starts, but expect unfamiliarity to come into play at some point. - Front Court Depth: With the transfer of Brian Oliver, Georgia Tech lost its best front court player from last season. Daniel Miller shows promise, but he gets little help from the erratic Kammeon Holsey. The only other front court player is freshman Julian Royal, who has good skill, but will need to become stronger to be a force with his back to the basket. Until then, he does have a nice midrange game, but Georgia Tech has plenty of people to take the jumpers. - Long Distance Shooting: While Rice Jr. can light it up some nights, he is an average 3pt shooter (around 30%). No one else on Tech's roster was worth a crap shooting the 3 last season either. Reed will provide some help, but he also isn't a prolific 3pt shooter (33% while at Arkansas State). by Theo Jones Fantasy Player to WatchA year ago Glen Rice shared the load with Iman Shumpert, but with Shumpert moving on to the NBA (methinks he might reconsider that decision now), Rice's numbers should take another step forward this year. While Rice's projected numbers are very conservative, if the stars align Rice's numbers could approach 17 points and 6 rebounds per game. Last Year's Player Statistics
