Derrick Randall declared eligible to play for Pitt this season

Pitt basketball got a bit of good news today when Rutgers transfer forward/center Derrick Randall was reportedly declared eligible to play this season. Instead of sitting out a year per normal transfer rules, Randall will be able to play for the Panthers immediately.

Not too much of a surprise there. The NCAA typically allows players to be eligible immediately for special circumstances. And considering Mike Rice went haywire in practices and the school was forced to fire him, well, it was a special circumstance.

Pitt's frontcourt situation now goes from dire to ... a little better. Let's be honest, the team is still pretty thin up front. Without Randall, Pitt would have needed to get creative. Maybe minutes for Lamar Patterson or Aron Nwankwo at power forward, etc. The next big question mark is JUCO transfer Joseph Uchebo, whose health is up in the air. If he's able to play, the frontcourt doesn't look so bad with Talib Zanna, Mike Young, Randall, and Uchebo.

How many minutes Randall gets is anybody's guess since he played sparingly at Rutgers. But Pitt needs him and he'll get time this season for sure.

Next up - pray everybody stays healthy.
