3 keys to recruiting at NC State for Dave Doeren

When Dave Doeren was hired on December 1, he quickly had to finish up a recruiting class started by Tom O'Brien in the remaining three months.  By most accounts, he did a commendable job and and matched, if not increased, the talent level O'Brien had already acquired for 2013.

So what does Doeren need to do to make his 2014 class a success and build for the future?

1. Win in your home state

For starters, the Wolfpack need to work on gaining a foothold in the state of NC in terms of both quantity and quality.  It's no secret that O'Brien's regime had not exactly made this a priority in its last few years.  As of writing, four of NC State's five 2014 commitments are in-state prospects.  Garrett Bradbury, Coult Culler, Bo Hines, and Jalan McClendon represent a good start to having a good presence in NC.  McClendon had some big name offers, and Hines had a Nebraska tender as well.  Culler was a battle between in-state schools that the Wolfpack won.  Signing at least 7 or 8 of the top 30 players in NC would boost the Pack's recruiting reputation.

2. Land a few premier in-state recruits

The next step is to win some major battles for the premier in-state recruits.  With elite talents Elijah Hood and Will Grier committed elsewhere, the Wolfpack need to gain pledges from at least one or two of the remaining stars.  Obviously, for those who follow recruiting, NC State made waves when Kentavius Street named the Wolfpack as his leader by a wide margin.  Signing Street would almost singlehandedly make this class a success. Dave Doeren has the Pack in the top groups for Lorenzo Featherston, Germaine Pratt, Jefferie Gibson, and a few other big-time local players, and needs to get at least one or two in-state players of their caliber.  The last 4 star or better recruits from NC that signed with NC State were David Amerson, Tony Creecy, and  Rob Crisp in 2010.  Not unrelated, that was the last time the Wolfpack finished with a top 35 recruiting class (according to Rivals).

3. Recruit in nearby talent-rich states

Finding pipelines in talent-rich states such as Florida, Georgia, and as of recently, Virginia, is the other most important task for Doeren and Co.  Luckily, the previous staff hit Georgia pretty hard and started to regain the reputation in Florida that Chuck Amato started during his tenure.  While at Wisconsin, Dave Doeren’s recruiting responsibilities were primarily focused on Florida, and he has maintained good relationships with programs down there.  He has already reaped some rewards in the 2013 class through these connections (as well as the transfer coup of Jacoby Brissett).  The overall goal will be to steal some of the mid-to-upper-tier players from these talent-rich states.

Luckily for Doeren and staff, getting elite talent at the skill positions is not the most important part of this class.  With high impact transfers coming in and a few talented holdovers from the O'Brien era, the staff can focus on the offensive line and shoring up the defense.  If the Wolfpack can do this and sign a top 35 class in the country, Dave Doeren will get his regime off to a solid start.
