Will's World: While Surprising, Greenberg's Firing Was Necessary

The news of Seth Greenberg's firing is surprising given the timing of it. Why so late in April? Why not a month ago? Was this decision that hard to make that it took a month and a half to make? If so, then you probably shouldn't be the AD then. There is no reason to take a month to make this decision.

I understand why he was fired. It seems like the program had plateaued. Greenberg took the Hokies to one NCAA tournament in his nine seasons as coach,  then was the butt of every joke when it came to being on the NCAA Tournament bubble. It seemed like every year, the Hokies were on the bubble since they made that last NCAA Tournament appearance, only to be a top seed in the NIT.

Personally, I was expecting Greenberg to be on the hot seat going in to the upcoming season, and maybe get canned if the Hokies didn't have a good season next year. You have to wonder if losing all of his assistant coaches factored in to this decision. It looked like no one wanted to coach with him.

As for a replacement, I would not look very high up on the ladder. Given the facilities, the lack of recent success, and overall lack of tradition of the basketball program, the odds of the Hokies getting a big name coach are very low, so that should take a guy like Shaka Smart out of the equation. Smart's turned down much better opportunities to stay at VCU, and even though his AD has left for Minnesota, I can't see him leaving there right now. I'm not going to name names here, because I really don't know who would be a good candidate for the job, but my guess is it won't be a big name.
