Another Milestone for Duke Basketball on the Horizon

On Wednesday, December 29th, 2010 Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski passed Dean Smith for the ACC’s leader in career wins and in doing so moved into 2nd place behind only his mentor Bob Knight on the NCAA’s record list. I didn’t write much about it because if you were online during those days it was hard to miss coverage of the event. Plus, while it’s anecdotal and provides talking points between rival fanbases, moving into second place on the list that matters, the NCAA list, isn’t as great of an accomplishment as it will be for Coach K when he moves into 1st hopefully later this season.

One milestone that is not getting as much press is Kyle Singler’s ascension up the leaderboards of Duke Basketball history. The senior preseason All-American has been known to turn up his scoring numbers when the competition gets greater. Judging by the paucity of competition in the ACC, that will have to wait until the latter rounds of the NCAA tournament, if Duke is fortunate to make it that far.

Regardless, since Kyrie Irving went down with an injury on December 4th in the Butler game, Kyle is averaging an amazing 22.25 points per game. While the competition hasn’t been the toughest, Kyle has been shooting 54% from the field and a ridiculous 48% from 3-point land. Because of this recent offensive output, Kyle has been moving up the charts at a rapid pace.

JJ Redick and Johnny Dawkins’ scoring records are practically out of reach but Kyle has a chance to move into 3rd place if he continues on his current pace. Here’s what he’ll need to average to accomplish such a feat:

28 games left: 17.1 ppg
27 games left: 17.8 ppg
26 games left: 18.5 ppg
25 games left: 19.2 ppg
24 games left: 20.0 ppg
23 games left: 20.9 ppg
22 games left: 21.8 ppg
21 games left: 22.9 ppg

At Kyle’s current rebounding average of 5.6, he will likely move into the Top 10 in rebounding with ease. In order to pass by the great Gene Banks and move into 7th place, he’ll need to average the following:

28 games left: 5.6 rpg
27 games left: 5.9 rpg
26 games left: 6.0 rpg
25 games left: 6.3 rpg
24 games left: 6.6 rpg
23 games left: 6.9 rpg
22 games left: 7.2 rpg
21 games left: 7.5 rpg
