Syracuse basketball target Eric Ayala will remain in 2018 class

What’s the next move for SU?

Class of 2018 prospect Eric Ayala will remain just that — a Class of 2018 prospect.

Ayala told SNY.tv reporter Adam Zagoria that he won’t reclassify to 2017 despite the interest from numerous high major D-I schools.

Last week, Ayala told Chris Carlson from syracuse.com that at least four schools were attempting to get him to reclassify to 2017, although he wouldn’t specifically name which ones. Syracuse and Oregon, however, were apart of that group, TNIAAM confirmed.

Syracuse’s scholarship offer to Ayala is also good for next season, so he’ll remain a prospect for the Orange moving forward.

Tom Espinosa, Ayala’s coach at Putnam Science Academy, said that grades weren’t an issue in Ayala’s decision to reclassify or not — it simply came down to what he felt was best.

And now we know — he’ll remain in the Class of 2018, and Syracuse has to move on to find another guard for next season.

As of right now, Frank Howard and Howard Washington will be the only point guards on next year’s roster, and the coaching staff clearly wants to add more depth.

With the hot pursuit of Ayala over the past few months, it’s clear the staff doesn’t believe two point guards will be enough for next season.

SU assistant Gerry McNamara is Ayala’s primary recruiter.

Tremont Waters, a Class of 2017 prospect, is an option as he decommitted from Georgetown a few weeks ago. He received his official release and included the Orange as a school he’s considering during an interview with the New Haven Register.

Syracuse has three available scholarships for the 2017-18 season.
