Athlon Sports put Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey in their Top 25 Breakout Quarterbacks for 2016.

The college football world is taking notice of Syracuse Orange QB Eric Dungey. Athlon Sports recently released list of Top 25 Breakout QBs for 2016 puts Dungey in the number nine slot.

Here's the write-up on SU's sophomore quarterback:

Syracuse has ranked near the bottom of the ACC in scoring offense in each of the last three seasons, but help is on the way for 2016. Dino Babers is regarded as one of the nation’s top offensive-minded coaches and arrives at Syracuse after a successful two-year stint at Bowling Green. Under Babers’ direction, the Falcons averaged 42.2 points a game and ranked fifth nationally in passing offense in 2015. Dungey showed promise as a true freshman last fall, throwing for 1,298 yards and 11 scores. The Oregon native also showed an ability to make plays on the ground (351 yards and four rushing touchdowns) but needs to do a better job of avoiding contact after missing four games due to injury. Transitioning to Babers’ offense will take some time for Syracuse’s personnel, but Dungey should get better over the course of the season.

The offensive line isn't a very experienced bunch so Dungey may find himself scrambling at times and hoping to avoid injury, but he should have plenty of playmakers to get the ball to in a hurry. The effect of the new offense, plus a few wide receivers stepping up big this season, could make the SU offense pretty threatening.

Dungey looked solid last year and his primary targets at wide receiver will mostly be juniors and seniors: Steve Ishmael and Ervin Phillips are both juniors and most likely the 1-2 guys for the Orange. Brisly Estime, a senior, hauled in 17 passes last season and redshirt senior Alvin Cornelius could break out this season.

It's clear to see why the hype about Dungey exists and he's a good candidate for a breakout season. Other familiar guys on the list? Virginia Tech's Jerod Evans came in at No. 21, with three other ACC quarterbacks ahead of Dungey: Florida State's Deondre Francios (7), North Carolina's Mitch Trubisky (3), and Louisville's Lamar Jackson (2).
