Game Recap

Same old song and dance, comeback affair for Syracuse.

The Syracuse Orange traveled down to South Carolina to take on the Clemson Tigers on Tuesday night. SU found itself in another thriller as it came back from being down double-digits. Syracuse escaped Clemson winning with a final score of 82-81 as Tyus Batle hit the game-winning three as time expired.

Syracuse didn’t get off to an auspicious start as it allowed Clemson to get off to an early 20-8 lead. The Orange was able to climb back in however thanks to Andrew White, Tyler Lydon and a plugged-in Tyler Roberson. Behind four first-half threes from White, Syracuse went into the half trailing 40-38.

The second half started off as a seesaw affair with Taurean Thompson playing exceptional ball. Clemson eventually extended its lead to double-digits but once again Syracuse came back to make things interesting. A three, pair of free throws and a dime from John Gillon cut the Clemson lead back to two late in the second half. With less than two minutes to go, White nailed a triple to put Syracuse back up one but Clemson responded with a three of its own to regain the lead.

With less than one minute to go, Clemson clung to a two point lead with the ball. Syracuse brought the full court press and White came up with a late steal. Lydon got the ball and drew a foul and calmly knocked down two from the charity stripe. On the ensuing possession, Donte Grantham hit from fifteen feet to put Clemson up two with seven seconds remaining. On the last possession, Syracuse kicked to a wide open Tyus Battle in the corner and the freshman knocked it down with alacrity to give SU the win.

Stats

Once again Syracuse was led in scoring by White who finished with 23 points on five triples. Lydon finished just shy of a double-double with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Thompson had 14 points while Gillon added 13 points and 8 helpers.

Next Up

SU now travels to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers for the second time this season. The rematch tips off at 1 pm on Saturday from the Pete.
