After a summer of waiting, former TCU and Big 12 defensive player of the year Devonte Fields has reportedly been cleared to join the Louisville football team on August 4.

According to ESPN's Max Olson, former TCU and former Big 12 defensive player of the year Devonte Fields has finally been cleared to join the Louisville football team and will do so on August 4th. Louisville opens fall football camp on August 6th. Olson writes:

The former Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year at TCU, Fields received clearance from UL's admissions department on Wednesday afternoon.

Fields was ESPN's No. 2 rated junior college recruit at Trinity Valley Community College last year, where he spent one season after being dismissed from TCU.

Fields' misdemeanor assault charge for hitting his ex-girlfriend that resulted in his dismissal from TCU was ultimately dismissed after he completed an anger management program. His arrival will not be without controversy. Petrino insisted on national signing day that they had done enough background investigating after talking to Fields and his family, Gary Patterson and other TCU coaches, coaches at Trinity Valley, and both Fields' attorney and the prosecuting attorney for the case, to feel comfortable giving Fields a second chance at major college football.

Controversy aside, Fields provides a major boost to a linebacking corps that already promises to be the strength of the Louisville defense. Fields will most likely slide into the spot vacated by the graduation of Lorenzo Mauldin and be the primary pass rusher from the edge.
