Quarterback Tyler Ferguson will transfer from Louisville

Louisville's quarterback competition is down to four contenders.

Tyler Ferguson, the junior transfer from Penn State who appeared to be solidly behind Will Gardner, Reggie Bonnafon, Kyle Bolin and perhaps true freshman Lamar Jackson in the fight to be U of L's starting quarterback on Sept. 5, has been granted a release to transfer from the school.

Ferguson, who spent the 2013 season as Penn State's backup quarterback, had initially planned to transfer to Western Kentucky, but followed Bobby Petrino when he got the head coaching gig at Louisville. Ferguson saw action in five games as a sophomore, completing 10-of-15 passes for 155 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions.

At Louisville, Ferguson was known for having a big arm which he struggled to harness. A la Fulton Reed, he would throw a beautiful strike on one rep, only to be wildly off target on his next two or three attempts.

Ferguson would have to sit out another season if he elected to transfer to another FBS program, but could be eligible to play immediately if he landed at an FCS school.
