Pitt's Talib Zanna dominating summer league action

I get it - the desire to get overly excited about Talib Zanna's strong summer league performances is there.

If you haven't heard yet or been down to Greentree to see for yourself, Zanna is dominating the games offensively. From what I can tell by the free recaps from Scout, he's leading all college players in scoring at just over 25 points a game in his three contests. In his most recent game on Monday, he had 27 points. Zanna's also been a beast on the boards as well, averaging 13 boards per contest, which could lead everyone, too.

Those numbers are enough to make anyone jump out of their seat, but ... haven't we seen this movie before? Well, yes. Yes, we have.

Several players like Zanna have had strong Summer League performances and not lived up to the hype. Dante Taylor is one of those examples did the same. A couple of times, actually. Patterson also did last year and while he had a decent season for Pitt, wasn't quite the player we thought he could be after the summer league.

Zanna's putting up some huge stats that just can't be ignored, but it's worth pointing out that it's no guarantee that a monster regular season is due up for 2013-14. And in Zanna's case, that's particularly true. He played extremely well in the non-conference portion of the season and then faded down the stretch in the Big East.

Don't get me wrong - I'm thrilled that Zanna is posting big numbers in the summer league - it definitely beats the alternative of getting schooled by Duquesne and West Virginia players. But ...

I'm not ready to buy in just yet.
