Pitt quarterback Tom Savage talks interceptions

Pitt quarterback Tom Savage talked to the media yesterday. While he didn't say much, if you read this quote the way I do, you'll find it somewhat interesting:

Pitt quarterback Tom Savage said Tuesday “some communication stuff” led to his two interceptions against Florida State, but he added the ultimate blame sits with him.

“I'm not going to get into that,” he said. “Obviously, the ball is in the defenders' hands so it's my fault and I'll take full responsibility for it. Just blame it on me. It's fine.”

That's not heaping the criticism on the wide receivers or even blaming them a little, but by saying he's not going to get into it and that there were communication issues, that seems to indicate they could have been partly the fault of receivers. He doesn't say that, of course, and instead does what he should in fully accepting the blame. However, if those throws were both truly on him, you'd think he would have come out and said that they were.

Either way, Savage accepted responsibility for the throws and that's what you want to see out of him. The pitch and catch game of passing in football is dependent upon receivers being where they're supposed to be. When that doesn't happen, quarterbacks don't always see it and are often left vulnerable.

We'll have to see how this plays out but I expect more production from Savage this week in New Mexico. He's got a game under his belt now, some actual experience in playing with his wide receivers, and the defense shouldn't be nearly as frightening.

One thing I'll be watching is the number of completions Savage is able to make. We may not know if poor routes played a part in the interceptions, but what we do know is that Savage surely has to improve on the percentage of completed passes (53.6%) he had against Florida State.
