Game Recap

Pitt overcomes a slow start and rolls over Youngstown State 91-73

Pitt looked sluggish to start the game. They committed careless turnovers, missed shots badly, and failed to stop baskets in transition. Through it all, Pitt held a constant rebounding edge, and eventually wore down the Horizon League opponent. Lamar Patterson led the way with 18 points as he was one of five Pitt players to reach double figures in scoring.

Lamar Patterson had a typical Lamar Patterson game as he finished with 18 points and four assists, and made three of Pitt's five 3 point field goals. Cam Wright chipped in with 13 points, while Derrick Randall added 11 points off the bench. The two starting forwards played very well as Zanna had 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Michael Young added 10 and 7, for one of his best games of his young career. Randall supplied 7 rebounds, as Pitt's size was clearly a difference in this one.

Pitt came out of the gates slow very slow, as it was finals week in Oakland and they had an eight day layoff in between games. They turned it on rather quickly in the second half, and asserted control for the rest of the game. Pitt committed 13 turnovers and allowed for Youngstown State guard, Kendrick Perry, to score a game high 28 points. Perry appears to be cut from the same mold as Penn State's Tim Frazier, as both guards torched Pitt in the non-conference schedule.

We have come to expect games like this from Patterson, Zanna, and Wright, but it was nice to see Newkirk and Michael Young turn in solid performances. Jamel Artis had another steady game himself, as the Pitt freshmen appear to be ACC ready. Notably, Durand Johnson had a cold day shooting. He entered today's game averaging 10 points a game, and finished 1-7 from the field for 6 points.

Pitt moves to 10-0 on the year. The Panthers will travel to familiar confines on Tuesday night. Pitt plays old conference rival Cincinnati, in a national TV bout at Madison Square Garden. This is widely considered Pitt's toughest non-conference game, and should be a good tune up before ACC play.
