The Pitt basketball program received some good news on Monday when Joseph Uchebo signed to the 2013 recruiting class. Uchebo is a junior college transfer that will have three years of eligibility remaining. Uchebo visited Minnesota this past weekend, after having visited Pitt a few weeks back, opted to sign with the Panthers.

Joe Uchebo comes with a unique situation. He was a highly sought after player in high school and committed to NC State initially. A coaching change played a role in his departure there, and he was released from his scholarship and enrolled in Chipola College in the junior college ranks. Uchebo excelled in his freshman season and averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds. This past year was not so kind as he missed the entire season with a knee injury. Some schools backed off, but Pitt felt comfortable taking the chance.

The 2013 recruiting situation has been pretty hectic for the Panthers with all of the roster turnover. Uchebo helps fill a spot, but comes in with some real potential. He is a 6-11 post player that was once highly recruited, and many suspect he has plenty left in the tank. Also, Uchebo should be able to rehab his knee with some of the best care in the country, with UPMC playing a role in his recruitment. Either way, Pitt is adding a quality risk. Welcome, Joe!
