Miami Hurricanes Land Texas Transfer

It’s been a busy off-season for Miami Hurricanes head coach Jim Larranaga, as he landed his third transfer since the end of the 2012-13 season.

Sheldon McClellan, the Texas Longhorns’ second leading score this past season, is headed to South Beach.

At 6-4, McClellan has good size for a shooting guard. He’s got the tools to be a great player. An above the rim athlete, McClellan struggles to hit threes (just 27% from three last year), but he has a quick first step and solid ball handling skills. He loves to slash and attack them rim. He averaged 13.5 points in just 27 minutes per game.

However, the issue he has always had is mental. He lacks focus and appears to checkout from time to time. This is challenging for any coach, but if there is one man who can work with him, it’s a veteran guy like Larranaga.

McClellan will have to sit out a year, but will have two years of eligibility left.

Ironically, after Shane Larkin declared for the NBA, the Miami’s back court was nearly cleared out. Now when 2014-2015 rolls around, the Hurricanes are going to be filled to the rim.

At point guard, Miami will have Angel Rodriguez and Corn Elder (a freshman who plays football).

At shooting guard, they are looking at McClellan and Deandre Burnett (who will be a freshman this season).

Also, don’t forget about current freshman Davon Reed. A talented combo guard who should be at the point, but will challenge for minutes off the ball.
