It's time for some tough love. Turgeon said the team would get better. He was wrong. He didn't count on Pe'shon Howard completely melting down. Remember, Howard was averaging 6 assists/game before the ACC season started with very few turnovers. It was certain to expect a dip when the ACC season started but he degenerated to the point of being nonfunctional. Perhaps we can blame Turgeon for having too quick a hook with Howard, but if you watched the games, it's hard to say that Pe'shon would have improved with more court time.
Nick Faust has no BBIQ and there are no signs it will improve. His shot selection is awful. He's half a player in my opinion. He is a two guard who can penetrate to the basket with ease. He's also a two guard with no jump shot. That's not good enough. When a player is one-dimensional, he can be stopped.
(As an aside, I can't tell you how sick I am of shooting guards who can't shoot. Maryland seems to have cornered the market on this type of player. Why?)
As for the rest of the team....
Turgeon wasn't exactly wrong. Layman, Allen, Cleare, and Mitchell have all gotten better as the season has progressed. I see them all getting even better next year especially with a true point guard (Roddy Peters) running the show.
Wells learned this year that he can't do it alone. He needs a real floor leader who can distribute the rock in the half court. This will take tons of pressure of Dez to create a shot on his own with no help. I'm disappointed in his season but I understand why it was so uneven.
Alex Len is a rich man's Mike Mardesich and I don't mean that as a complement. He's physically weak (he's routinely pushed around by smaller guys in the post), does not have any low post moves that he can rely on, and is a bad post passer. I will miss his defense but I'm ok rolling with Mitchell, Cleare, Layman, and Dodd in the front court next season. Addition by subtraction as much as I hate to say it.
