Kenny Williams likely out for the season after knee surgery

The sophomore guard is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Kenny Williams’ sophomore season with the Tar Heels is likely over. Coach Roy Williams announced on Wednesday after his team’s win over NC State that his sophomore guard would be undergoing knee surgery and is likely to miss 4-6 weeks.

The injury to Williams’ knee occurred on Tuesday in practice before the NC State game. He was in a suit on crutches for the game in Raleigh. Williams was forced into a starter role for most of this season with Theo Pinson out with an injury of his own.

While Williams’ offense can be made up for, his defense, particularly on the perimeter, will definitely be missed by the Tar Heels. He is probably the best UNC has to guard the three, which is something the team has struggled with this season.

The full nature of Williams’ injury is still unknown, but the Tar Heels will have to figure out a way to carry on without him. His absence for the rest of the season means that Carolina will finish just two games all season with their full arsenal of players healthy.
