John Wildhack says nothing has changed with Jim Boeheim's retirement plan

The Hall of Famer has one more season on SU’s bench.

Syracuse Orange head coach Jim Boeheim’s retirement status is still the same.

SU athletic director John Wildhack said in an interview with ESPN Syracuse’s Brent Axe that nothing has changed regarding Boeheim’s status.

"Previous to me coming here, the transition was announced by all parties, agreed to by all parties, released by all parties. It's my job to ensure as smooth a transition in this program as we can. That's my job and I'm going to do my absolute best to do it. .... We plan on executing that which has been put in place."

As Syracuse.com’s Chris Carlson points out, there has been some ongoing theories regarding Boeheim’s future.

Remember when everyone tried to figure out what SU meant when Boeheim said he “intends” to retire?

"Coach Boeheim has also told me that he intends to retire as head coach in three years," the initial announcement read. "His goal in making this decision and announcement now is to bring certainty to the team and program in the coming years, and enable and plan for a successful, longer-term transition in coaching leadership."

And when Wildhack was hired in July 2016, Boeheim left the door open to continue coaching past the 2017-18 season during an interview with ESPN’s Andy Katz.

So far the plan is still in place, but I don’t think it would shock anyone if Boeheim decides to coach past next season. With 1,000 career wins (sort of) approaching, it’d be interesting to see if he wants to stick around to have 1,000 in the eyes of the NCAA.

But then again, I don’t think Boeheim cares too much what the NCAA has to say.
