Georgia Tech gets good news as ineffective AD Mike Bobinski departs

Today I put on my Georgia Tech fan hat. It was a good day in Atlanta. In welcome news AD Mike Bobinski is headed to Purdue. Previous AD Dan Radakovich left Georgia Tech on probation, as he mis-handeled an NCAA investigation involving the football team, but he did improve the facilitates at the school. That’s something.

GeorgiaTech_golfMike Bobinsksi’s tenure at Georgia Tech was marked by… um well… um… yea… maybe. Ok How about nothing?

AJC columnist Jeff Schultz rips Bobinski describing Georgia Tech as dysfunctional under Bobinski.

From that article, the below is simply embarrassing treatment for a football team that is one year removed from winning 11 games and finishing in the top 10.

Bobinski’s soldiers in the Tech administration originally cut a deal that the Jackets would travel to Dublin, not by a major airline like Delta or (title sponsor) Aer Lingus, but Omni Air, a low-budget carrier that made its mark in transporting cargo and more recently focused on military charter flights to garden spots like Afghanistan.

Thankfully Paul Johnson fought for his team to fly on normal plane, and now they will.

He gave perpetually over whelmed basketball coach Brian Gregory an extension in 2013, only to fire him 2 1/2 years later. The subsequent hire of Josh Pastner was hailed as questionable at best.

In addition, football coach Paul Johnson recently said Georgia Tech was way behind facilities wise.   Georgia Tech of course isn’t playing the same game financially or academically as Alabama, and I’m sure Paul Johnson is aware of that. For him to say that though speaks volumes of the direction of Georgia Tech athletics.

Several ACC AD’s struck me as charismatic and innovative leaders. I certainly wouldn’t put Mike Bobinski in that category. He is gone now, and Georgia Tech is better for it.

Now Georgia Tech must take advantage of this gift, and hire the right AD. I’d prefer to see a Georgia Tech person, but if not someone with ACC or SEC ties would be fine. Bobinski came from Xavier and after 3 1/2 years appeared ill-equipped to run a Power 5 program.

Good Luck to you Purdue…
