The Frank Beamer era at Virginia Tech is over. Enter one of the hottest names in coaching Justin Fuente who rebuilt the Memphis program. Luckily for Fuente, there is a lot to work with at Virginia Tech. Bud Foster is back to the coach defense and WR Isaiah Ford and TE Bucky Hodges are two of the best players returning at their position in the ACC. Despite a 7-6 record last year, the Hokies only had 1 loss by more than 10 points. Virginia Tech may be closer than you think to being a top 25 program again.
Will Go 9-3 (6-2) if:
Jerod Evans can turn into the answer at quarterback. The issue with the Hokies in recent years, has been an offense that lacked imagination and consistency. There are weapons on offense with Ford, Hodges, and RB Travon McMillian. Better QB play and more creative play-calling could really turn the Hokie offense into a problem to deal with. If the Hokies could get a split in their Tennessee and North Carolina, they could start the season 6-1.
Do you really think a Bud Foster coach defense will have a defense ranked 59th in the nation in scoring again? Yep me neither.
Will Go 7-5 (4-4) if:
The schedule gets to Virginia Tech. The Hokies might actually be better, but the schedule is not easy. Tennessee , East Carolina, and Notre Dame are three difficult non-conference games. The Hokies could lose 2 of 3 or even all 3. Road trips to North Carolina and Pittsburgh will be a headache too.
It might take some time for the new offensive staff to get their team comfortable with a new system. Bud Foster’s should get improved play from the defense, but there isn’t as much talent as we’re used to seeing on that side of the ball at Virginia Tech. They might not hold up if the offense struggles early.
