ACC Football Championship Game heavily considering Orlando

Is this it? Seems like it, even if no one’s confirmed.

This version amends a previous version of the article that confirms the move. Various outlets that also confirmed have since recanted that confirmation, so we are following suit.

The ACC is heavily considering Orlando’s Camping World Stadium for the site of the conference’s football championship game on December 3. ESPN’s Rene Ingoglia orginally reported Orlando was a done deal and that tweet is still up. However, his colleague, Brett McMurphy filed a story that Orlando is “in the hunt” and mentions them as a heavy favorite in the process.

Should the league go with Orlando, it would end a several-week search process since the conference elected to relocate the game from Charlotte. The ACC followed similar moves by the NCAA and NBA, removing neutral-site games from the state of North Carolina over the controversial HB2 law.

Given the amount of reporting around the ACC and its involvement with Orlando today, it would be assumed we’re close to a resolution for the relocated site. We’ll update this story to confirm as soon as that confirmation occurs.

Earlier published version

The ACC will hold its football championship game at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium on Saturday, December 3. ESPN’s Rene Ingoglia was the first to report the news earlier this afternoon.

Finding a new home was a critical task for the ACC in recent weeks after the league announced it would relocate neutral site postseasons from North Carolina in response to HB2. The ACC typically holds the game at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers. Last week, it had appeared that Washington D.C., Orlando and campus sites were the clubhouse leaders for where the game could relocate to.

Orlando had originally had high school championships on the books for that weekend, but it’s now assumed those have been moved elsewhere (perhaps UCF?). No details were included on that in the original report.

While the ACC has moved its largest and most expensive event now, it still has to find homes for a number of other championships originally based in North Carolina. Those include Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving, Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Tennis, Men’s and Women's Golf and Baseball. NCAA Basketball Tournament games are also being moved out of the state in response to HB2.

Syracuse doesn’t appear to be in line to win the Atlantic Division this year, but if they should happen to, they’d be playing down in Florida. As conference play ramps up for the ACC, we’ll start to get a clearer picture of which teams could meet at Camping World Stadium this December. This weekend’s matchup between Louisville and Clemson will likely go a long way in deciding one of the participants.
