BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech basketball coach James Johnson wasn’t shy about hyping his youngest players entering the season.
Tuesday against West Virginia, he let their walk back up his talk.
“We’re not ordinary freshmen,” guard Ben Emelogu, a team captain, said after scoring a game-high 22 points off the bench in the Hokies’ 87-82 win over the Mountaineers.
Emelogu played 30 minutes. Freshman guard Devin Wilson scored 15 points in 34 minutes, and sophomore guard Adam Smith had 19 points in 33 minutes.
Meanwhile, senior center Cadarian Raines (Petersburg) played just 16 minutes because of foul trouble, and senior wing Jarell Eddie played 23 minutes. The duo combined for 14 points.
