Pitt already has its sights set on several candidates for its men's basketball head coaching vacancy but a former coach says he wouldn't mind being considered, either.
Former Duquesne coach Ron Everhart said recently that while he isn't a candidate right now, he would absolutely welcome the chance to interview for the Pitt job:
“I would be very interested,” said Everhart, 54. “Without hesitation. I would like to be a head coach again one day.
“Any job, especially a BCS job in a major metropolitan area like Pittsburgh where you have a great following and tremendous fan base, that's a real destination job that any coach would look at and say, ‘Wow.'
“You get to line up against (Duke's) Mike Krzyzewski, (North Carolina's) Roy Williams and (Virginia's) Tony Bennett. That's a dream come true for anybody that wants to coach. The best of the best.”
Everhart is now an assistant under Bob Huggins at West Virginia. He did a decent job as a head coach at stops at McNeese State, Northeastern, and most recently Duquesne. He helped turn the Dukes program around a little bit before eventually plateauing. In 2008-09, he won 21 games there and led the team to the NIT.
Despite his past experience and history of up-tempo basketball (something Scott Barnes has said he would like), I don't see Everhart getting even a remote look here. Pitt already has many other viable candidates that have had more success at mid majors than he did. In 18 years, he never made the NCAA Tournament and reached the NIT only three times. That just isn't the type of resume that Pitt is looking for, in my estimation.
